미니멀 음악의 샘플링에 관한 연구 - 필립 글래스와 스티브 라이히의 작품을 중심으로
A Study on the Sampling of Minimal Music - Focusing on the Works of Philip Glass and Steve Reich

본 논문은 필립 글래스(Philip Glass, 1937-)와 스티브 라이히(Steve Reich, 1936-)의 녹음된 음반을 대상으로 하는 대중음악 속 샘플링(Sampling) 사례를 분석한다. 이 안에서 미니멀 음악은 첫째, 특유의 이산적 특성(Discrete traits, 離散性)과 모듈성을 기반으로 하는 루프(Loop)로 활용되거나, 새로운 음악적 맥락에 배치되는 독특한 음향 도구가 된다. 둘째, 녹음된 미니멀 음악의 사운드적 특이성을 중요하게 다루는 방식으로 샘플링된다. 셋째, 라이히의 음악 중에서 ‘샘플링’이라 부를 수 있었던 작업들, 그리고 글래스가 대중음악을 차용해서 작곡했던 작업들이 다시 샘플링되고, 이 과정에서 원곡에 내재되었던 의미가 새로운 방식으로 재해석된다. 결과적으로 본 연구를 통해 미니멀 음악사조가 20세기 말 살아있는 음악실체로서 다양한 영역의 청자를 만나 왔음을 알 수 있다. 또한 미니멀 음악을 재료로 한 대중음악가의 재창작이 결국 아카데미에서 행하는 것에 비해 훨씬 더 입체적이고 창조적인 해석 작업이 될 수 있음을 보여 준다. 더 나아가 글래스와 라이히의 몇몇 작품은 샘플링 관습을 거침으로써 이 음악의 특성과 미니멀 음악의 속성을 다시 고민하게 한다.
Abstract
This study analyzes sampling cases in popular music that sampled the recorded albums of Philip Glass (1937) and Steve Reich (1936). Within this framework, minimal music is first utilized in loops based on its distinctive discrete traits and modularity or becomes a unique sonic tool placed in new musical contexts. Secondly, certain sampling in popular music emphasizes the sonic peculiarities of the recorded minimal music. Thirdly, it re-samples works by Reich that could be termed ‘sampling’ and compositions by Glass that borrowed from popular music, reinterpretating the meanings inherent in the original pieces in new ways. Consequently, this study demonstrates that the minimal music movement has met with listeners from various fields as a living musical entity towards the end of the 20th century, and that popular musicians have been engaging in creative interpretations of specific pieces of minimal music.
