스페인 화가 프란시스코 고야는 1816년 <투우> 판화집을 발매했다. 판화집은 인간이 정복의 대상으로서 동물과 벌이는 다양한 결투장면들을 보여준다. 동물과 투우사의 박진감과 투우장의 긴장된 분위기가 섬세한 판화기법으로 구현됐다. 고야가 작품을 제작한 시기 스페인에서는 투우 대중화로 인하여 동물오락 산업이 증가했고, 유럽에서는 식민주의 개척으로 이국주의 정서가 유행했다. 더불어 야생동물원과 박물학적 관심이 생겨나면서 인간-동물의 관계는 긴밀해졌다. 동물을 주제로 다루는 작품에서 예술가의 표현능력에 따라 우리는 동물에 주의를 기울이고 동물에게도 감정이 있는가 동물도 고통을 느끼는가 하는 문제를 생각하게 되었다. 본 연구는 고야의 <투우> 분석을 통하여 계몽주의 시대에 인간-동물 관계의 변화를 이해하고 미술가의 의도를 파악하고자 한다. 고야가 <투우>에 인간의 부조리한 욕망을 드러내는 방식을 분석하고, 나아가 동물의 고통 및 감정에 관한 현대적 동물윤리에 관한 문제로까지 논의를 확장하고자 한다.
Abstract
In 1816, Francisco Goya published 33 etchings, La Tauromaquia. The series shows scenes in which humans fight animals as objects of conquering. Goya captures the vibrancy of animals and bullfighters and the tense atmosphere of the bullring with delicate etching techniques. For Goya's European contemporaries, expanding colonialism popularized exoticism, as well as entertainments such as zoos and animal fights. This changed the relationship between humans and animals, bringing them closer. Goya’s work with animal subjects prompts us to pay attention to animals and consider whether animals have feelings or feel pain. This study seeks to understand the artist’s intention by analyzing how he reveals wild human desires in La Tauromaquia. Further, it expands the discussion to the issues of animal pain, emotions, and modern animal ethics.
