Abstract
The paper examines the musical comicality shown in La Poupée de Nuremberg, composed by Adolph Adam(1803-1856). Cornélius, who represents men, is ruled by Bertha, dressed in doll’s clothes; through this, the patriarchal system and male supremacy is expressed satirically. The music of Cornélius and Bertha strengthens the comedy of the opera through the following three musical techniques. First, deviation from the norms related to beat helps to make Cornélius laugh and express Bertha as a figure who overthrows the female image of the time. Second, Bertha's victory over Cornélius is described through the quotation of Mozart's Jupiter motifs. Finally, tone-painting through the tonal relationship and voice arrangement depicts the scenes in which Bertha dominates Cornélius and ultimately leads him to ruin.
