예술가 노동자성의 인정은 동시대 예술가들의 중요한 사회적 요구였다. 이는 문화예술인을 대량으로 배출하는 사회 체계임에도 예술인으로 살아가려는 이들의 사회적 생존을 방관하는 현실에 대한 저항의 결과라 할 수 있을 것이다. 우리는 이 글에서 예술가의 노동자성이 예술가의 생존과 관련한 긴박한 요구임을 수긍하면서도 그것이 자본주의 사회에서의 예술적 실천을 둘러싼 근본적 딜레마를 부정하여서는 안 된다는 점을 밝힌다. 자신의 활동에 대한 보상과 보호를 위해 사회가 분배하는 법률적인 형식적 지위가 노동자일 때, 자신을 노동자와 동일시하는 것은 유효하고 정당하다. 그러나 그것이 바로 예술적 실천을 노동으로 규정할 수 있도록 하는 것은 아니다. 우리는 마르크스의 정치경제학 비판의 핵심적인 개념인 상품 형태와 물신주의에 유의하면서, 아도르노의 미학에서 상대적으로 간과되어 온 ‘절대상품’이란 개념에 다가선다. 아도르노의 개념은 그에 대한 흔한 이해처럼 예술의 자율성을 옹호한 예외적 마르크스주의 미학자였던 것이 아니라 예술의 자율성/타율성이란 쟁점을 변증법적으로 사고하려는 그의 사유를 집약한다. 우리는 이에 관련된 최근의 논의들을 참고하면서 예술작품과 상품의 관계를 다시 한 번 묻고 예술의 자율성과 타율성이라는 아포리아가 자본주의적 근대에서 예술의 정치를 사유하는데 발본적인 의미를 지고 있음을 살피고자 한다.
Abstract
Whether the artist could be laborer has been a critical issue among artists in the present. While acknowledging that the approval of laborer-ness of an artist is deeply related to the survival of an artist, we try to explore that it could not allow to deny the underlying contradiction of artist practice. When the judicial and formal status which the society distributes for the reward and protection of artist practice is the laborer-ness, it is inevitable that artist identifies with the laborer. But it could not permit that artist practice equates to the labor. Considering major concepts of Marx’s critique of political economy, we will reveal the possibility of artist practice as an anti-labor. Furthermore, drawing attention to the disputes around the autonomy/ heteronomy of art, we will revisit the concept of ‘absolute commodity’ of artwork presented in Th. W. Adorno magnum opus Aesthetic Theory.
