본 논문의 목적은 스탠리 큐브릭의 영화에 대한 총체적 분석을 통해 그가 즐겨 사용했던 기호들과 캐릭터, 기표들과 내러티브가 상징했던 의미와 사상이 무엇이었는가를 밝히고자 하는데 있다. 특히 그가 주로 사용하였던 중요 기호, 파티, 화장실, 거울과 눈에 대해 작품 속에서 사용되었던 실제 사례들을 들어 설명하였다. 시대와 사회를 막론하고 참여할 수 있는 자격의 코드를 지정한 후 그 안에서 서열을 재정립하는 파티는, 여러 형태로 변형되어 그의 영화 속에서 중요한 기호로서 작용하였으며 이것은 주인공이 세계와 맞서도록 하는 기폭제의 역할을 수행한다. 그리고 파티에서 소외된 이들은 화장실로 도피처를 삼아, 심리적 상처를 거울을 통해 치유하거나 폭주한다. 이 연구를 통해 21세기인 오늘날까지도 여전히 영화계 내에 짙은 잔영을 드리우고 있는 거장의 유작들의 서사를 이해하는데 매우 유용한 하나의 논리적 시각을 제공할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.
Abstract
The goal of this research is to study the symbols, characters and theme of the films of Stanley Kubrick, who is considered as one of the most important directors of last century, by analyzing his movies. And further than that, I also study the uniqueness of his idea. In a broad point of view, this study embodies the structure of Kubrick's all films, including his early works such as the Killing and Killer's Kiss. Usually the themes of his movies are hidden under many layers of narration. Therefore, finding those and analysing process is key to understand metaphors of social issues, that Kubrick wanted to discuss, is one of most important achievement of this research. He made many remarkable movies by removing personnel excuses, sympathy and unfounded hope from the original novels, and by using the symbols frequently to make another layer of allegory. In this research I revealed the meaning of the main symbols of his movie to understand him more deeply.
