2026년 개관 예정인 국립디자인박물관은 현재 아카이브가 부재한 상황이다. 아카이브는 박물관의 성격을 정의하고 전시 방향을 결정하는 핵심적인 역할을 한다. 불행히, 한국 근대의 디자인 원형들은 대부분 소실되었으며, 한국 디자인 역사는 주로 서양 디자인 역사 연구틀에 의존하고 있다. 최근, 초국가적 디자인사 연구에 대한 관심이 증가하면서 대안적인 접근 방식이 부각되고 있다. 국립디자인박물관의 아카이브를 구축하기 위해서는 '오리엔탈리즘', '포스트 식민주의', '식민지 근대성'과 같은 주요 개념을 연구할 필요가 있다. 또, 기존의 박물관 아카이브는 보존, 수집, 전시에 초점을 맞추지만, 국립디자인박물관은 다른 기관과의 협력, 디지털 자료 수집, 일상생활과 문화적 주제에 대한 탐구, 아시아 디자인 문화에 대한 연구 등을 통해 아카이브의 주제와 영역을 확장하고, 이를 바탕으로 플랫폼으로서의 디자인 박물관으로 발전해 나갈 수 있다.
Abstract
The National Design Museum, scheduled to open in 2026, currently lacks an archive. Establishing an archive is imperative as it plays a critical role in shaping a museum’s identity and guiding its exhibitions. Regrettably, a considerable portion of original Korean design works were lost, resulting in a prevailing reliance on Western design history research to understand Korean design. A growing interest in adopting transnational design history research positions it as an alternative perspective. To develop the archive of the Design Museum, it is crucial to engage with essential concepts such as ‘orientalism’, ‘post-colonialism’, and ‘colonial modernity’. Additionally, while traditional museum archives focus on preservation, collection, and exhibition, the Design Museum can expand that scope by establishing collaborations with other institutions, collecting digital materials, exploring themes pertaining to everyday life and culture, and conducting extensive research on Asian design culture.
