Abstract

This study explores East Asian women's action cinema, with a focus on the representation of cross-dressing (男装) heroines and the gender performativity articulated through their action. The primary texts analyzed are Hibari's Three Roles: Yukinojō henge (1957, Japan), Come Drink with Me (1966, Hong Kong), and The Night of Full Moon (1969, Korea). In Hibari's Three Roles, Misora Hibari's cross-dressing, combined with her star image, creates a disturbance through the transgression of gender boundaries. This misrecognition enables her to embody the righteous hero-an image rarely granted to actresses in period action cinema. In Come Drink with Me, Golden Swallow's disguise works as a shield that allows her to infiltrate male-dominated spaces without being confined by the objectifying gaze. While the narrative eventually returns to a male-centered resolution, the film briefly but powerfully allows masculine values such as strength and resolve to be claimed by a woman. Finally, in The Night of Full Moon, Maehwa's cross-dressing differs from earlier Korean historical action films where disguise was tied to survival. Her disguise functions as both determination and marker of equality, while also exposing homosocial desire and destabilizing the male monopoly of action. Although eventually reabsorbed into heteronormativity, Maehwa remains subversive, showing that dominant norms and values can always be overturned.
