이 논문은 현대 복음전도의 핫 이슈 중 하나인 ‘명목상 신자’에 대한 연구이다. 현대 교회는 외적으로 거세게 밀려오는 ‘세속화’라는 쓰나미와 내적으로 교회의 도덕적 불감증이 빚어내는 여러 가지 역기능적인 현상들 속에서 방향을 잃은 채 표류하고 있다. 특히 오늘날의 복음 전도는 한낱 교회 성장을 위한 이벤트성 행사 정도로 치부되면서 점점 더 실용적 측면에 뿌리를 내리게 되었고, 그 결과 ‘명목상 신자’가 대량으로 생산되기에 이르렀다. 그러나 안타깝게도 명목상 신자에 대한 연구는 지금까지 제대로 주목을 받지 못하였다. 따라서 이 논문은 향후 명목상 신자에 대한 논의의 촉매제가 될 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 배경 속에서 연구자는 다음과 같은 내용들을 중심으로 연구를 진행하였다. 첫째, 명목상 신자에 대한 정의의 문제이다. 이에 대해 세계복음화를 위한 로잔 협의회가 제시한 정의와 함께 요한복음 3장을 통해 성경이 말하는 명목상 신자가 누구인지를 살펴보았다. 둘째, 구약과 신약에서 명목상 신자의 문제가 어떻게 전개되고 있는지에 대하여 신학적, 성경적 접근을 시도하였다. 셋째, 명목상 신자에 대한 역사적 접근으로서 콘스탄틴의 국교화 선언에 따른 역기능적 현상, 중세 로마 가톨릭 교회의 국가-종교가 빚어낸 부정적 영향, 18세기 계몽주의와 자유주의 신학이 합작한 이신론의 폐해, 포스트모더니즘과 세속화의 문제를 분석하였다. 셋째, 앞서 언급된 내용들을 중심으로 오늘의 교회가 명목상 신자의 문제를 어떻게 대처해야 할지에 대한 실제적인 대안을 제시하였다. 오늘날 교회와 영적 지도자들의 위기는 명목상 신자의 문제와 무관하지 않다. 근본적으로는 복음의 능력이 약화된 데에서 그 문제의 원인을 찾을 수 있다. ‘죄와 연관하여 십자가와 그리스도를 깨닫지 않고서는’ 결코 구원의 복음이 전해질 수 없음을 확신하면서, 교회는 다시금 십자가의 복음으로 돌아와야 할 것이다. 이러한 측면에서 존 웨슬리는 명목상 신자의 문제와 치열하게 싸운 영적 거인이었다. 전도자이든 피전도자이든 웨슬리가 말한 것처럼 “하나님이 보시는 나”를 깊이 볼 수 있어야 한다. 그러할 때 성령께서 전도자를 깨끗한 그릇으로 사용하실 것이며, 피전도자는 도덕적인 차원을 뛰어넘어 성경이 말하는 죄 앞에서 참된 구원을 갈구하게 될 것이다. 이것이야말로 “값싼 은혜”의 확실한 해독제이다.
Abstract
This article focuses on nominal Christians as one of the hot issues in contemporary evangelism. The church today loses direction and goes adrift in secularization and moral insensibility. In particular, contemporary evangelism is being discounted as an event for church growth. It puts an emphasis on the practical aspect. The problem of nominal Christians are not irrelevant to this situation. Unfortunately, the topic of nominal Christians has not received much attention. Therefore, this study will be the catalyst as a developmental discussion for the future. In these settings, this article contains the following questions. In the first place, how can we define nominal Christians? For this, the Lausanne Committee’s definition in regard to nominal Christians and chapter 3 of John’s Gospel will be a navigational aid. Secondly, how does this topic develop in the Old Testament and the New Testament both theologically and biblically? Thirdly, how did some events in the history of the church have a significant influence over this problem? For instance, Christianity as the religion of state by Constantine the great, the Roman Catholic Church in the medieval period, the Enlightenment, and Secularization. Finally, what are the practical alternatives for the contemporary church that can be derived from this analysis?Today the crisis of the church and spiritual leaders has to do with the problem of nominal Christians. Fundamentally, the crux of the matter is caused by the weakness of the gospel in them. The church must turn to the gospel of the cross, assuming that the gospel of salvation cannot be proclaimed without realizing Christ and the cross with regard to sins. In this respect, John Wesley was a spiritual giant. He struggled fiercely with the matter of nominal Christians. Regardless whether he or she is an evangelist or a hearer, we are to see “ourselves in God’s sight” as John Wesley said. Just then, the Holy Spirit will use an evangelist as a pure person and a hearer will seek the real salvation in front of the sin the scripture says beyond the moral level. This is the sure antidote for “cheap grace.”
