Abstract
The purpose of the present study was validation of Neff(2003)'s Self-Compassion Scale for the children in Korea. Self-compassion, derived from Buddhist psychology is a currently developed self-related theme. It offers similar benefits to self-esteem and appears to have fewer downsides as the ultimate marker of psychological health. Neff first devised a six-component, 26-item Self-Compassion Scale. The present study investigated whether Neff's Self-Compassion Scale could use for the children in Korea. Korean version of Neff's Self-Compassion Scale was that Jin and Lee(2009) translated. Validation of the scale used confirmatory factor analysis(construct reliability, construct validity : factor loading, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and criterion-related validity) and structural equation model. Subjects were 469 students of 5th and 6th grades at Kangwon-do, Korea. The results were as follows: First, Self-Compassion Scale could use for elementary school children. Second, six-component, 24 item scale was best fit among the four models. Third, this scale would help assessing children's self-compassion in order to train and teach self-compassion for their psychological well-being and analyze differences, if any, between different ages, different sex, and residence areas. Fourth, girls and boys were not different in overall self-compassion score, but self-judgment, and isolation were significantly higher among girls than boys. This might be explained by the fact that women are more self-critical and ruminate on negative aspects of themselves more often than men. 5th graders were significantly higher in overall self-compassion score, and self-kindness, and 6th graders in self-judgment, and isolation. Fifth, translation of the Neff's Self-Compassion Scale needed to explore further.
