Abstract
One of the most important differences in the phonology of English and Korean lies in the way they treat rhythm. English is well-known as a typical stress-timed language, where the number of stresses is the most important factor in determining the duration of sentences. In contrast, Korean is a syllable-timed language, where the number of syllables is the most important factor. Because of this important difference in rhythm, Korean learners of English have great difficulties acquiring fluency in speaking English. The goal of this paper is to investigate whether Korean elementary school students have a stress-timed rhythm or not in speaking English, depending on their levels of proficiency. It was found that the higher-level group showed a tendency toward stress-timing, whereas the lower-level group showed a tendency toward syllable-timing. The results of this study showed that there is a positive correlation between the level of learners' proficiency and the degree of stress-timing and that more time and effort should be invested for the teaching of English rhythm in elementary school English in Korea.
