Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences for selection of gifted elementary school students depending on the size of the school. Four large schools, six medium-sized school, two small schools were selected. We analyze the selection methods of gifted students in these schools. We examine whether there is any difference of selection method depending on the size of the school. In addition, deficiencies of the survey was supplemented through in-depth interviews with gifted education teachers in charge. The results were as follows: First, some of large-scale school and mid-size school with fierce competition selected gifted students by multi-stage assessment and various selection tools to recommend gifted students, but achievement test and paper test score was very important for recommendation. Second, mid-school and small school with less competition selected the gifted students by observation and paper test. According to in-depths interviews with gifted education teachers in charge, the teachers were suffered from the complaints of parents, the unconcern of general teachers, the competitive selection of the upper gifted education. In the mid-school with less competition and small school, it is problem to work overload of gifted education teachers in charge anf in difference to gifted students of general teachers. As the gfted students were selected by teacher’s observation and recommendation effectively, it is necessary to offer formal operating manual for gifted students selection and to be diversified by selection method depending on the size of the school.
