In 1989, Romanians protested against their dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu, and managed to take down the communism and start their way to democracy. However, in the last years, the polls indicate that the number of Romanians that regret communism is increasing, giving birth to the phenomenon of “communism nostalgia”, its expression being observable in Romanian literature, film, television programs, press articles and a highly used topic for Sunday family gatherings, topics that influence not only the ones that lived during Ceausescu time, but also the younger generation that had no real contact with communism. The main causes of communist nostalgia can be traced to the decrease of living standards, the high unemployment rates, the constant changes in the education and medical systems, the continued economic uncertainty, and political instability, aspects that profoundly impact Romanians’ lives 25 years after the Revolution of 1989. This paper aims to make a detailed presentation about the expressions of communist nostalgia in Romania and the causes behind the emergence of this phenomenon so long after the fall of the communist system.
