Abstract
Contemporary challenges such as epidemics, wars, and climate crises necessitate international collaboration that transcends national and regional boundaries. In response, the international community prioritizes the development of global citizens who can help solve global problems. The social studies curriculum is particularly crucial for cultivating the attributes of a responsible global citizen, focusing on fostering a sense of community, compassion, and cooperation. However, existing social studies curricula mostly emphasize cognitive aspects and fail to incorporate instruction and learning that promote empathy. A balanced development of cognitive, socioemotional, and behavioral domains is necessary to foster desirable attributes of global citizenship. This study ascertains the importance of empathy in the context of global citizenship education and proposes methods for cultivating empathy through picture books in primary social studies global citizenship education. Furthermore, picture books enable students to develop the qualities of global citizens who uphold universal human principles and actively resolve global issues by understanding and empathizing with situations they have not personally encountered. For this purpose, this study employs the ‘learn–think act’ approach to illustrate the process of global citizenship education using picture books as a series of understanding, thinking, and acting. Each stage of the process involves students cultivating empathy by comprehending the perspectives and circumstances of the characters, relating to their feelings, and subsequently responding to the content of the picture books. The findings can help enhance the development of a cohesive and sustainable society by providing various examples and implications for the successful integration of this instructional approach in educational environments.
