Abstract
This study sought to identify social perceptions of school technology adoption and examine temporal trends and key issues by performing a big-data analysis of news reports on school technology in domestic newspapers and broadcast media from 2010 to 2025. A total of 3,507 news articles were collected through BIGKinds and underwent text mining and sentiment analysis via TEXTOM. Findings showed an increase in school technology reports from 1,551 articles in the first period (2018–2021), which corresponds to the COVID-19 pandemic, to 1,976 in the second period (2022–2025), which corresponds to the government’s enforcement of ICT education policies. Sentiment analysis revealed an overall dominance of positive sentiment; in the first period, 78.0% of reports were positive and 22.0% negative, while in the second period, 82.6% were positive and 17.4% negative. Positive sentiments highlighted the role of school technology in reducing learning gaps, facilitating intergenerational knowledge sharing, and enhancing future education. Meanwhile, negative sentiments included concerns over device usage, lack of social consensus, privacy violations, and technology dependence. This study’s significance lies in its reexamination of media’s role in shaping policy and public discourse for ensuring social acceptance of school technology and its emphasis on considering both positive and negative sentiments in education policy design. In addition, recent applications of technology in schools have significantly and irreversibly changed traditional elementary classroom practices. This study’s analysis of the media’s optimistic expectations and critical concerns sheds light on the crucial factors surrounding technology implementation in elementary education. However, its limitations include being confined to an analysis of news reports without reflecting actual educational settings, and the media sentiment analysis results may not fully represent public sentiment or opinions. Also, because school technology is expected to undergo continuous change and development, this study does not provide a comprehensive explanation of long-term changes or impact.
