Abstract
This study aimed to explore the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) characteristics of elementary school teachers regarding the errors committed by fifth- and sixth-grade students in fraction operations. It also aimed to analyze the obtained data by teacher experience level and error type. Fraction operations are considered one of the most challenging areas of elementary mathematics. Thus, teachers must recognize student errors accurately and implement appropriate instructional strategies. Accordingly, this study focused on common error cases exhibited by elementary students to evaluate the knowledge of content and students (KCS) and the knowledge of content and teaching (KCT) of elementary school teachers. KCT was further classified as understanding of instructional sequence (KCT1), designing corrective questioning (KCT2), and devising corrective instructional strategies (KCT3). The response data were coded according to a predefined analytical framework, and response distribution characteristics were scrutinized using descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation analysis. The results were tabulated according to two groups: experienced and novice teachers. The findings revealed that both teacher cohorts demonstrated robust content-related knowledge in recognizing fraction operation errors and interpreting the cognitive backgrounds of misconceptions (KCS) of elementary school students. However, differences were observed between the two groups in relation to KCT sub-components: novice teachers displayed KCT1 more prominently, experienced teachers performed better in KCT2, and both groups exhibited similar patterns for KCT3. Results by error type indicated comparative difficulties in specifying questions and strategies for error types necessitating conceptual meaning transformation: for instance, mistakes pertaining to simplification, reciprocal errors, and flaws in equation construction. In this study, meaning transformation errors denote mistakes occurring during the process of converting the structural meaning of fraction concepts into representations or procedures. These findings suggest that theory-based education in teacher preparation programs and years of classroom experience in actual school settings are reflected differently in teachers’ PCK. Therefore, professional teacher development programs should incorporate needs-based practical training to reinforce customized instructional strategies for specific error types. The implications derived from this study can serve as foundational data to enhance the fraction instruction competency and mathematics teaching expertise of elementary school teachers.
