북한 과학환상영화의 장르적 의미 연구－북한 문화예술에서 ‘환상’의 의미와 필요성－

북한의 과학환상영화는 남한의 SF 영화와 유사한 개념을 가지고 있지만 다른 문화예술갈래와 마찬가지로 북한 만의 고유한 의미로 정의하고 있는 갈래(쟌르)이다. 이에 본고는 북한만의 특징적인 장르라고 할 수 있는 과학환상영화가 가지고 있는 특징에 대해 분석하기 위해 분류체계 상에서 나타난 특징을 연구하였다. 북한에서 과학환상영화는 과학기술을 통해 도래할 미래를 아동․청소년에게 제시하고, 이를 통해 사회주의 이상향이 가지고 있는 비전과 이를 위해 필요한 과학기술에 대한 교양과 교육을 동시에 전달하고자 하는 장르로 규정된다. 이러한 방법론은 1993년 황정상의 『과학환상문학창작』에서 영향을 받았고, 1996년 안희열이 정리한 분류체계에서는 문화예술의 정식 갈래로 추가되면서 공식화 되었다. 장르의 의미를 분석하기 위해 분류체계 상의 특징을 살펴보면, 과학영화와 과학환상영화라는 유사한 언표를 공유한 장르가 서로 다른 분류체계 내에 위치하고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이를 토대로 환상이라는 개념이 장르의 형성에 어떤 차이점을 발생시켰는지를 고찰하고, 그로부터 파생된 개념들을 통해 과학환상영화의 장르적 정체성을 규명할 수 있다. 북한에서 환상의 개념은 문화예술의 기본 창작방법론인 사회주의 리얼리즘과 대립되는 개념이었다. 하지만 시대의 변화에 따라 확장되는 의미들에 부합하기 위해 환상을 도입한 것이다. 이 과정에서 환상이 현실의 감추어진 면과 지향하는 바를 드러낸다고 정의한 잭슨의 이론들과 유사한 부분들이 나타난다. 결국 북한에서의 환상은 리얼리즘과 대립되는 개념이 아니라 리얼리즘에서 미처 드러내지 못한 부분들을 제시하는 보충의 개념으로 자리하게 된다. 북한의 과학환상영화는 근본적으로 SF 영화와 상이하지 않은 장르적 특징을 지니고 있다. 하지만 이는 북한 문화예술의 미학적 가치에 부합하기 위한 변용과 시대적인 요구에 부합하기 위한 움직임으로 이해할 수 있다. 그러기 때문에 과학환상영화와 같이 새롭게 정의된 장르의 의미에 대해 고찰하고 그 의의를 규명하는 작업은 북한 문화예술 연구의 동시대성을 확보하는 작업이기도 하다. 또한, 장르적 특성을 밝혀 해당 장르적 특성을 공유하고 있는 텍스트들을 해석하는 작업은 북한 문화예술, 그 중에서 영화예술 연구의 방법론을 확장시키는 일이기도 하다.
Abstract
North Korean science fantasy film has a similar concept as South Korean SF film, however, as other cultural art field, it is a genre which is defined as North Korea’s own meaning. Here, this research investigated the characteristic in classification system to analyze the characteristics of science fantasy film, which is a characteristic genre of North Korea. In North Korea, science fantasy film is defined as a genre that suggests the coming future to children‧adolescents through science technology, through this, intends to instruct the vision of socialistic ideal and both refinement and education of science technology which is required for that vision. This methodology was influenced by Hwang Jeongsang’s 『Creation of Science Fiction Literature』 of 1993, and was formalized when it was added as a formal genre of cultural art in the classification system arranged by Ahn Heeyeol in 1996. To analyze the meaning of genre, when investigating the characteristic of classification system, it can be confirmed that the genre which shares the similar expressions, i.e. science film and science fantasy film, is located in mutually different classification system. Based on this, this research investigated which difference the concept of fantasy was made in formation of genre, and searched identity of science fantasy film genre through the concepts derived from it. In North Korea, the concept of fantasy was contrasting to socialistic realism, the basic creation methodology of cultural art. However, fantasy was adopted to coincide with the meanings that are extended along with change of period. In this process, the points similar to Jackson’s theory, who defined that fantasy reveals hidden aspect and pursuing point out of the reality. Eventually, fantasy of North Korea is not the contrasting concept to realism, but was established as a complementary concept that suggests the parts which realism cannot reveal. North Korean science fantasy film fundamentally has genre characteristics which are not different from SF film. However, it can be understood as the movement to meet the transformation of North Korea and demand of the period. Accordingly, studying the meaning of newly defined genre as science fantasy film and investigating the significance of it is also a work to establish the contemporary characteristic of North Korean research. Also, a work to interpret the texts that share the relevant genre characteristics by investigating genre characteristic is to extend North Korean cultural art, that is, methodology of film art research.
