Abstract

The understanding of the relation between Romania and the Habsburg Empire must be limited to Transylvania as the west-northern region of Romania today. Early from the 15th century the other two Romanian principalities were directly and indirectly under the control of the Ottoman Empire. In Romania of the Medieval period, the west of the Carpathian Mountains fell under the control of the Kingdom of Hungary (after this, it was controled by the Habsburg Empire, the Austrian Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy) and the south-east of the Carpathian Mountains were under the control of the Ottoman Empire until the mid-19th century. Then the Romanian Carpathian Mountains have the important role of boundary line and the buffer zone of these two Empires and at the same time the Carpathians became also an intersecting point of the continuous communication and the reintegration among the Romanians of Transylvania, Muntenia and Moldova in the aspect of the cultural self-recognition. The establishment of the Greco-catholic (Uniate) church formed by the suggestion of the Habsburg Empire, had a role of the window for the reentering into conversation with Rome after the withdraw the Roman troops from Dacia and simultaneously, became an intermediation which awakened to the “Latinity” as the Romanians' root and trunk. Romanian intelligentsia produced by this union of church contributed to develop the protection of Romanians' rights and the emancipation of liberty in Transylvania. The influencing power of these intellectuals catalyzed the emancipation and the freedom of the other principalities dominated by the Ottoman Empire through which it was accomplished the formation of the Romanian national consciousness and cultural identity. The motive and the stimulus, which helped the Romanians of Transylvania to recognized and to be awaked to the national consciousness and the cultural self-recognition standing all hardships throughout the millennium, are the recovery and the reestablishing of the “Latinity”. The policies of the Habsburg Empire, especially related to the religion, contributed to form the first school of the Romanian intelligentsia, to recognize the national consciousness and to constitute the modern Romanian language. Therefore for the understanding of the establishment of national identity and the modern Romanian culture, the relation with the Habsburg Empire had a very important historical significance for Romanians.
