Abstract

Hungary and Romania have historically had tense relations. These tensions find their origins in the Transylvania problem. The people who became the Hungarian nation first settled in Transylvania upon their arrival from Asia. They created a state there, and then progressed westward to forge a territorial entity that included the area of modern-day Budapest. Up to the late 18th century, the Hungarians ruled Transylvania, while the Romanians, the Sasians and Seklers were subordinated to them. This began to break down in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as the consequences of the French revolution were felt. A strong form of national consciousness emerged, and this gave rise to a deepening sense of political, economic and also cultural conflict. In the socialist period, a post-nationalist nationalities policy was pursued under the rubric of Leninism. But the obsession with national identity that continued to characterize relations between the Hungarians and Romanians was a sign of the persistence of nationalism. This article applies the theory of internal colonialism to understand the sources of conflict between Hungarians and Romanians with respect to Transylvania. Internal colonialism is a situation in which a ‘superior’ national group exercises suzerainty or rules an ‘inferior’ national group within a given territory in which they both reside. It is useful for making sense of the conflict between Hungary and Romania in Transylvania.
