Abstract
In the 19th century the process of nation building within the Habsburg Empire led to a dramatic change of consciousness and of behavior not only among its German but also among its non-German people. In the process of the development of nations that define themselves by a common language an ambivalent German-Austrian nation emerged. This became a problem, for the German-Austrians on one hand saw themselves as supportive of the state and responsible for the perpetuation of the monarchy but on the other hand as inseparable connected to their German heritage. The German cultural identity, i. e. the commitment to a common language and culture was difficult to align with an Austrian patriotism that was recognizing the Austrian autonomy. After the dissolution of the Habsburg monarchy this ambiguity lingered on in a different form. On one hand poetic imagination was used to compensate the loss of the supranational political unit, on the other hand the German identity gained weight. In the end this led to the Anschluss of 1938 and to the active support of different activities of the Third Reich by many Austrians.
