Struggle for the Russian Dar-al Islam: Russian Muslims and Their Attempts to Defend Muslim Way of Life in the Russian Empire

1905년 제 1차 러시아혁명은 러시아 제국의 큰 정치-사회적 변혁을 몰고왔다. 1917년 러시아 혁명 또한 1905년 제 1차 러시아 혁명이 없었다면 불가능 했을 지도 모른다. 당시 러시아 노동자들은 자신들의 평의회인 소비에트(Soviet)를 처음으로 조직하여 러시아 국민들에게 국가의 본질과 혁명 조직의필요성을 일깨워 주었다. 게다가 러시아 제국의 황제 니콜라스 2세의 10월선언은 러시아 무슬림들에게 러시아 제국 내 무슬림들의 조직화와 정치화에큰 영향을 주었다. 러시아 제국의 무슬림들에게는 니콜라스 2세의 10월 선언이 자신들의 요구와 믿음 그리고 무슬림들의 권리를 보호할 수 있는 기회가되었다. 이를 바탕으로 러시아 무슬림들은 1905년 러시아 의회인 두마(Duma)에 이슬람 정당을 등원 시키는 데 성공하게 되며 러시아 제국 내 ‘무슬림 회의’(Muslim Congress)라는 기구를 조직하게 된다. 많은 서구문헌들은 당시의 이와 같은 러시아 무슬림들의 활동들을 단편적인 교육과 문화개혁의 결과로 나타난 무슬림들의 계몽운동과 근대화 과정이라고 설명하고 있다. 본 논문은 1905년에 구체화된 무슬림들의 자치권 획득운동과 러시아 무슬림들의 문화보존 투쟁을 1860년 이후 발전한 러시아 무슬림들의 대개혁 운동의 일환 속에서 조명해 보았다. 따라서 본 논문은 1860년이후 러시아 무슬림들의 조직화와 정치적 활동을 고찰해 보면서 1905년 제1차 러시아 혁명이 러시아 무슬림들에게 가져다 준 기회와 변화를 분석해 보았다. 또한 제 1차 러시아 혁명 이후 러시아 무슬림들의 활동과 정치화가 이전의 활동과 어떻게 유기적 관계를 맺고 발전하였는지도 연구해 보았다. 아울러 러시아 제국에서의 무슬림 생활방식들이 어떻게 보존되었는지도 알아보았다. 전체적으로 본 논문을 통해 러시아 무슬림들의 자치권 획득을 위한 노력과 투쟁들이 어떻게 역사적인 관계를 가지고 발전하였고 이후의 사건들이 어떻게 유기적으로 연결되었는지 살펴보았다.
