Abstract
Czechoslovakia’s second president, Edvard Beneš, ranges from being described as “Europe’s most brilliant democrat” to being held largely responsible for the country’s downfall. This study analyzes the root causes of his concerns during the national crisis. From the founding of Czechoslovakia to the First Republic, Beneš made a key contribution to the acquisition of sovereignty, territorial demarcation, and national unity based on Western democracy with the support of Western countries. However, in 1938, the West supported Germany’s invasion of Czechoslovakia. Despite the West’s betrayal, Beneš rejected Stalin’s offer to support the Czechoslovak war effort alone, perceiving it to be communist in intent, and maintained a Western-oriented state. However, the Beneš’s trauma over the Munich Agreement, the Nazi atrocities, the abandonment of the United States, and a two-track strategy based on Soviet friendship and pressure eventually drove Beneš towards communism. Despite tolerating communization, Beneš refused to recognize the nature of communism, being an agonizing ‘leader at the crossroads’ until his death.
