대중소설로서 <소대성전>의통속성과 인물형상 －경판 16장본(한남서림본)을 중심으로－

<소대성전>은 다른 작품에서는 볼 수 없는 개성적인 주인공과 조력자 이승상을 통해 차별화를 꾀하면서 영웅소설의 장르적 특징을 지키고 애정서사의 달콤함을 더해 대중을 공략하고 있는데, 이런 특성은 경판에서 축약을 통해 남겨진 부분을 볼 때 더욱 확연하게 드러난다. 주인공 소대성은 무엇이든 마음대로 하는 자유로운 존재로서 궁극적 권력자의 형상으로 그려졌다. 이에 걸맞게 그는 무서울 만큼 크고 강한 육체적 우월성과 강한 자부심이 강조되었는데, 이는 잘생긴 외모와 예의바른 성품을 지닌 다른 영웅소설의 주인공들과는 다른 면모이다. 긍정적 인물인 이승상은 이런 차이를 효과적으로 부각해 주는 인물이어서 크게 축약되지 않고 개성적 인물로 남겨졌다. 채봉은 여성주인공이지만, 이런 차별화에 기여하는 서사가 별로 없어 통속적 재미에 기여하는 달콤한 연애 장면 외에는 많이 축약된 것을 볼 수 있었다. 이처럼 통속소설로서 <소대성전>의 차별화 전략은 무엇이든 자기 뜻대로 할 만큼 육체적, 정신적으로 강력한 주인공의 형상에 그 핵심이 있었는데, 이는 영웅적 주인공이 등장하는 현대 통속소설들과 그 궤를 같이하는 것이다. 여기에서 통속성이 지니는 보편적 가치와 문제점을 궁구하는 하나의 시론이 만들어질 가능성이 발견된다.
Abstract
Sodaeseong-Jeon pursues differentiation from other heroic novels through unique protagonists and helpers, while attracting popular fun interest by adding sweetness to the narrative of love. And this is more evident when you look at the remaining parts, even though the story has been shortened. The protagonist of this work is portrayed as a free being who does whatever he wants, and as a person with ultimate power. Correspondingly, Sodaeseong-Jeon emphasized the appearance of the main character with physical superiority and strong pride that is frighteningly large and strong, which is different from the main characters of other heroic novels with good-looking appearance and polite personality. Prime Minister Lee, a positive character, was a character who effectively highlighted these differences, so he remained a unique character without being greatly shortened. Although Chaebong is the female lead, there are not many narratives that contribute to this differentiation, so other stories have been shortened except for the sweet love scene that contributes to popular fun. As such, the core of the differentiation strategy of the popular novel Sodaeseong-Jeon was the image of a protagonist with a body and mind strong enough to do anything. And this is in line with modern popular novels featuring heroic protagonists. Here, we discover the possibility of creating an essay that explores the universal values and problems of populism.
