艮齋 田愚와 省齋 柳重敎의 心說論辨에 관한 고찰

Abstract

A key issue in Ganjae-Sungjae's Mind Theory Debate was the interpretation of “Li's superintendence(主宰)” and “mind comprehends nature and sentiment(心統性情).” Sungjae argued that "the mind is Li" to interpret “mind comprehends nature and sentiment(心統性情)” in the context of “Li's superintendence(主宰).” In response, Ganjae criticized, "It is a recognition of Li as Ki, which can lead to self-indulgent errors." This was the starting point of the argument between them. Despite the long run of the argument, the gap between the two has not narrowed much. In the course of his argument with Sungjae, Ganjae developed his theory by changing his interpretation of “Li's superintendence” several times. However, Sungjae showed little change in academic theory during his argument with Ganjae. However, after concluding his argument with Ganjae, Sungjae attempted to make a fundamental change in his theory. As a result, Sungjae came to claim, "The mind is a physical being, but the Bright Virtue is a metaphysical being," which led to another serious debate with Jungam at last. In this way, Ganjae had a great influence on Sungjae's theory, and Ganjae's theory was behind the debate between Sungjae and Jungam.
