Abstract

Ju Yo-seop entered Hujiang University Middle School (University of Shanghai) in 1921 and had spent nearly seven years in Shanghai as a student until he graduated from the Department of Education at Hujiang University. The years of 1921 to 1927 during Ju’s stay in Shanghai were a dynamic, historical period during which many political events took place in China. During the May 30 Incident, which lasted for a long time, Ju, in solidarity with Chinese university students, actively protested against Japanese colonial rule, a common enemy of both China and Korea. Ju Yo-seop closely observed the events in Chinese society and elevated them into artworks with keen insight. In his works, most of the main characters can be described as the ‘vanguard,’ those who took action at the forefront. Ju believed that to succeed in a revolution and to transform the society, not only are those who stand at the forefront important, but also those who aim to lead and guide the community on the right path. At the time, Ju always lamented that South Korea had no significant leader to guide such a forefront group. His awareness of the significance of leadership pervades the works he created in Shanghai. This suggests that his joining Heungsadan and being influenced by Ahn Chang‑ho are closely connected. This article aims to provide a multifaceted understanding of Ju Yo-seop’s work by analyzing the exceptional historical insight and the sense of leadership demonstrated in his writings during his time in Shanghai. It is also expected to serve as a valuable reference for studies on Korean writers who lived in Shanghai during the Japanese colonial era.
