Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to fundamentally clarify the foundation of King Sejong's governance philosophy and leadership who achieved splendid accomplishments in our nation's cultural development. As the 4th king of Joseon Dynasty enthroned with King Taejong's great trust and senior statesmen's entreaties, King Sejong was intelligent, polite and devoted to parents in his nature and his love of learning was extraordinary. Among his achievements, the creation of Hunminjeongeum (訓民正音), Korean script, can be assessed as a great project that marked a milestone in national culture and, to summarize the foundation of governance philosophy that he tried to fulfill, it can be called realization of 'benevolent politics (仁政)' and people-oriented politics, which are the core of religious and political ideology in Confucianism. King Sejong maximized organizational power and solidarity based on partnership through establishing study organization named Jiphyeonjeon (集賢 殿), a national research institute, and passionately pursued respect for truth and study for principle rather than just royal authority. It is desirable cultural awareness that the modern society requests to seek for the humanitarian spirit based on his refined Hongik-Ingan and pioneering creativity through shedding new light on governance philosophy and communicational leadership of King Sejong in golden age of our national culture into this rapidly changing global era.
