고전대하소설에 나타난 시비(侍婢)와 억압의 문제

이 글은 고전대하소설에 나타난 ‘도구화된 시비(侍婢)’의 양상을 살피고 이들이 어떠한 방향으로 억압되어 있는지, 그 과정에서 나타난 서술시각을 논의하기 위한 목적으로 기획되었다. 고전대하소설의 시비는 계급적으로도 억압되어 있으며, 성적으로도 억압되어 있다. 이처럼 여러 방향으로 억압되어 있는 고전대하소설에서의 시비의 양상은 인간으로 대우받지 못한, 자신의 육체조차 주인에게 종속되어 있던 시비들의 물질성을 재현하는 것이라 할 수 있다. 서술자는 ‘시비’를 통해 자신의 이야기를 표현하지 않는다. 서술자의 시각을 대변하는 것은 오로지 지배 계층이며, 시비는 서술자의 시각에서 벗어나있다. 일각에서는 이것을 주변인물의 한계이지 시비의 한계가 아니라고 말할 수도 있을 것이다. 하지만 시비가 중심인물이 될 수 없는 한, 이는 서사의 주변부에 위치하는 보조인물의 한계이자 시비의 한계가 될 수밖에 없다. 시비들은 갈등의 야기를 위해 또는 갈등의 해소를 위해 매를 맞고, 죽고, 강간당한다. 이러한 일련의 과정은 주동인물의 승리라는 서사의 가장 큰 귀결을 위한 토대가 된다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine aspects of 'the objectified maid' and to discuss how 'the objectified maid' is suppressed. In the process, we will discuss the narrative perspectives revealed in the novels. Maids of the classical long novels are taken advantages of as sexual objectification and the lowest level of hierarchy. Likewise, the aspect of the maid in the classical long novels suppressed in various ways seems to allude materiality of the maids, even whose bodies are subordinate to their masters. The narrator does not express his or her story through 'the maid'. The ruling class only represents the narrator's perspective, and the lower class deviates from the narrator's one. Someone may say that this is the limit of minor roles, not the limit of the maid. However, as long as the maid cannot play the main roles, this is the inevitable limit of the minor roles appearing in periphery of the narrative. Maids are beaten, killed, and raped to cause conflicts or resolve conflicts. This process is based on the greatest conclusion as the victory of the main characters in the narrative.
