Abstract

This paper examines a part of the poetic world of the late Joseon scholar-official Oh Si-su, focusing on his official travel poetry. Official travel poetry refers to the poems written while serving in government positions in provincial areas. Oh Si-su served as the governor of Jeolla and Pyeongan provinces, during which time he compiled two volumes of poetry: 「Wansanrok」 and 「Giseongrok」. These two volumes contain about 100 official travel poetry. The paper analyzes the patterns of official travel poetry in these volumes by dividing them into three main themes: the scenic beauty encountered in unfamiliar places, the king's grace as experienced by a local official, and emotional exchanges made in the provincial areas. The first theme, the scenic beauty encountered in unfamiliar places, is the most commonly found motif in official travel poetry and appears frequently in Oh Si-su's work. He writes about his impressions of the natural landscapes and cultural events in Jeolla and Pyeongan provinces. The second theme, the king's grace as felt by a local official, highlights Oh Si-su's role as a bureaucratic scholar. In many of his poems, he expresses loyalty to the king and devotion to his duties, reflecting on various situations that remind him of the king's benevolence. The final theme, emotional exchanges in a foreign place, portrays Oh Si-su's interactions with local people in the provinces, where he spends time socializing and relieves his worldly worries or finds comfort through human connections.
