Students' individual work is the basis of the educational process in the modern education system. In modern conditions it is important to individualize the learning process, to generate in students the skills to work independently. The article summarizes the experience of professors from different countries (Russia, the Republic of Korea, Republic of Belarus, Ukraine, Bulgaria) on activation of an independent and creative activity of students, in particular, studying Russian as a foreign language. The article tells about a typical and original forms of self-study, about the personal role of the teacher in the learning process at the university, calls the most important directions for improving the organization of independent work of students in preparation for any lessons. The article also indicated the internal motivating factors that help to enhance students' independent work.
