초록

The phenomenon of “Old Spinsters” is becoming more and more prevalent, which has provoked wide concern and deep exploration. In recent years, ‘Old-Spinsters’ has become a common name for those who were born in the 1970s and 1980s and are still single and stuck. As explained in the new vocabulary list published by the Ministry of Education in August of 2007, “Old-Spinsters” refers to those white-collar ladies with economic independence, high education and a tall figure. With the rapid development of China, people’s living standards and spiritual lives have come up to a new level, and female status has risen quickly. But the press declares that we have already stepped into an “Old-Spinster Age”. Some of these women say they do not believe in marriage because their parents have a bad relationship. They have lost confidence in marriage and they choose to avoid it. But this is probably only a small portion of the ‘Old Spinsters’. They want to be in a relationship, but they are looking at the wrong criteria for a relationship. Most simply haven’t met ‘the right man’ because they are busy with work, have a small social group, and are picky. They want to fall in love, but can’t find the proper match. Many want their potential husbands to make more money than they do, for example, or have a higher position in society. Some women even say they will only consider a man taller than 180 ㎝. As we all know, the phenomenon of “Old-Spinsters” has not only aroused the focus of the press, but has also been an issue of intense interest to socialists and psychologists. This phenomenon brings many disadvantages, such as higher social cost of living and a worse psychological state of those individuals and their families. And it has become an unfavorable factor in social stability and harmony.
