초록
This study analyzes the stages and mechanisms underlying the grammaticalization of the adverb of degree ‘youxie’ through a diachronic lens. The main conclusions are as follows: First, the grammaticalization of ‘youxie’ progresses through three stages: the initial stage (Song Dynasty), the developmental stage (Yuan Dynasty), and the completion stage (Ming Dynasty). Second, analogy functions as a key mechanism during the initial and developmental stages. The emerging structure ‘you+(xie+AP/VP)’ acquires the meaning ‘to have a slight degree of AP/VP’ by analogy with ‘you+(xie+NP)’. Third, reanalysis operates as the primary mechanism in the completion stage. With the frequent occurrence of ‘youxie+AP/VP’, the structure undergoes a shift: ‘AP/VP’ assumes the role of the predicate, while ‘you’ experiences semantic bleaching and loses its predicate status. This transformation fixes ‘you’ and ‘xie’ as a unified adverbial structure, ‘youxie’, which modifies ‘AP/VP’. Consequently, the reanalysis of ‘youxie+AP/VP’ marks the completion of its grammaticalization as an adverb of degree.
