번역과 근대 소설 문체의 발견- 잡지 『少年』을 중심으로

Abstract

It is well known that munhak(literature) is a word translated in the process of accepting or implanting western modernity. New translated concept-word ‘munhak’ demanded a new écriture and style. The Intellectuals of enlightenment- era in Korea, for example, Yoo Gil-Jun, Yi Gwang-su, Choi Nam-Seon etc. made various experiments on styles through newspapers and magazines published in this era. Sonyeon is a modern magazine issued from November 1908 to May 1911. Sonyeon carried not a few foreign literary works and showed new prosaic styles. The discovery of style in Sonyeon seems to be accomplished through the translation of western literary works via mostly Japan. The translation of Tolstoi’s short stories and Yi Gwang-su’s early writings is to be a clue necessary to elucidating the course. Sonyeon actively accepted Tolstoi’s novels and ideas as a model. In the process of translating his short stories and other foreign literary works Sonyeon discovered the style of modern short story. And Yi Gwang-su, translator of Young Sacrifice, experimented a new style by way of writing a short story Heonsinja i.e. A Man of Self-Sacrifice. I think the style seen in Sonyeon and Yi Gwang-su’s early writings plays a key role in the formation of modern literary style.
