한국 근대 초기 여성담론의 생성과 변모 - 근대 초기 신문을 중심으로

이 논문의 목적은 한국 근대 초기 여성담론의 생성과 변모 과정을 밝히는 데 있다. 정리의 대상이 되는 시기는 1880년대부터 1910년대 말에 이르는 기간이다. 연구의 방법으로는 이 기간에 걸쳐 간행된 신문 가운데 여성담론을 수록한 신문 전부를 조사하고, 각 매체별 특징을 추출 비교하는 방식을 선택하였다. 한국 근대 매체 최초의 여성 관련 담론은 관보의 성격을 띤 신문 『한성주보』에서 발견할 수 있다. 『한성주보』의 여성담론은 지극히 전통적이며 보수적인 시각을 드러낸다. 여성담론을 본격적으로 게재하기 시작한 최초의 근대 매체는 『독립신문』이다. 『독립신문』에서는 한국 근대 여성담론의 핵심을 이루는 논제들인 남녀동등 담론, 축첩폐지 담론, 과부개가 담론, 조혼폐지 담론, 여성교육 담론 등이 모두 다루어진다. 『독립신문』의 여성담론이, 남녀가 원래부터 동등한 권리를 지니고 태어났다는 천부인권 사상에 바탕을 두고 전개되는 것에 반해, 『제국신문』의 여성담론은 풍속개량이라는 측면을 중시하며 전개된다. 『대한매일신보』 논설란의 여성담론은 『독립신문』이나 『제국신문』에 비해 상대적으로 보수적이다. 여성교육을 여성에 대한 남성의 계도 책임과 연결시키는 것 또한 『대한매일신보』 여성담론이 지니는 특색 가운데 하나이다. 『대한매일신보의 독자투고는 예외 없이 여자들에 대한 신교육의 필요성을 강조하면서, 주요 논지를 충군과 애국사상 등의 민족담론으로 연결시키고 있다는 공통점이 있다. 『만세보』의 여성담론은 이 신문이 주력했던 위생담론의 유포와도 직결이 된다. 『매일신보』의 여성담론의 전개 방향은 앞선 시기 신문들의 담론의 방향과는 매우 큰 차이를 보인다. 『매일신보』의 조혼폐지 담론은 조선인과 일본인이 하나가 되기 위한 필요조건들을 제안한 식민지 계몽담론의 주요 범주를 형성한다. 한국 근대 초기 신문 소재 여성담론은 매체별로 다소간의 차이가 있기는 하나, 시간이 흐를수록 인권존중의 측면보다는 풍속개량의 측면으로 초점이 모아진다는 특징이 있다. 한일병합 이후 1910년대에는 민족담론의 소멸과 함께 일시적으로 여성담론도 소멸된다. 그런 점에서 한일병합이라는 역사적 사건은 한국 근대 여성담론의 진전을 가로막는 불행한 전기로서의 의미 또한 지니게 된다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the specific characters of feminist discourse in newspapers in early modern Korea. The object of the investigation is feminist discourse in newspapers published from 1890 to 1919. The first mass media which published remarkable feminist discourse was the Dongnipsinmun. It was first published in 1896. The subjects of feminist discourse in this newspaper were the equality of the both sexes, the discontinuance of an early marriage, the remarriage of a widow, the establishment of facilities for the education of women and girls, and others. The feminist discourse in Dongnipsinmun was founded on the theory of God-given rights. But the feminist discourse in the Jekuksinmun was focused on the assertion of improvement of old customs. The character of feminist discourse in Daehanmaeilsinbo is more conservative rather than that of Dongnipsinmun and Jekuksinmun. The feminist discourse in Daehanmaeilsinbo is closely connected with a national independence discourse in the newspaper. The feminist discourses in Daehanmaeilsinbo emphasize to educate women and girls under the protection and guidance of men. The feminist discourse in Mansebo is based on a discourse of improvement of old customs which is closely connected with a sense of sanitation. The Maeilsinbo was a newspaper published by the Japanese government-general of Joseon since Korea-Japan Annexation in 1910. The feature of a feminist discourse in the Maeilsinbo was different from that of other newspapers in early modern Korea. The discourse in the Maeilsinbo has an interest in uncivilized customs in early modern Korean society. It blames the customs as an act of barbarity. The interest of the feminist discourses in newspapers in early modern Korea focused on a improvement of old customs instead of human right. The feminist discourse in newspapers in early modern Korea also disappears with a national independence discourse after Korea-Japan Annexation.
