이 연구는 나주지역 향리의 동향을 그들의 사회적 네트워크를 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 나주지역의 향리가는 한국 근대(한말 일제하) 지역사회의 주도적 역할을 담당하였다. 1894년 농민전쟁기에는 호남에서 유일하게 守成에 성공하였던 지역이 나주이다. 이때 나주 수성에 실질적인 역할을 하였던 이들이 나주의 향리가였다. 이들은 다시 1895년 단발령에 항거하는 의병에 주도적인 역할을 하였고, 계속적으로 한말 의병에 참여하여 항일활동을 하였다. 또한 이들은 지주가로 성장하기도 한다. 지주가로 성장한 이들은 각종 사회활동에 참여하여 그들의 유지기반을 확보하려 하였다. 그들은 경제력을 바탕으로 신교육에 적극적이어서 새로운 지식기반을 확보하였다. 그러한 지식을 바탕으로 민족운동도 활발히 전개하였다. 특히 여기서 주목할 것은 이들이 사회적 주도층으로 활동할 수 있었던 가장 중요한 기반이 그들 사이의 사회적 네트워크였다는 사실이다. 밀양 박씨가가 나주의 사회주도층으로 존재할 수 있었던 이유는 그들이 향리가였기 때문이 아니라 향리가로서 맺은 사회적 네트워크와 지주경영을 통한 경제적 성공 때문이었던 것으로 보인다. 또한 그들의 사회적 네트워크는 통혼관계와 근대적 교육을 통해 이루어진 것이었다. 그리고 언론활동을 통한 지역을 넘어선 네트워크 형성도 그들의 영향력에 크게 기여한 것으로 보인다. 또한 그 위세는 약화되었지만 이러한 사회적 네트워크는 현재까지도 이어지고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.주제어密陽 朴氏家, 鄕吏, 社會的 네트워크(network), 羅州 守城, 羅州 義兵, 有志基盤, 有志政治, 地主
Abstract
This study try to observe trend of ‘Hyangli(鄕吏)’ from Naju area. The role of the ‘Hyangli’ from Naju area lead the community in Modern age of Korea. The period of farmer’s war in 1894, Naju was only successful defence of their castle in Honam area. At that time substantial role which is protection of their castle was the ‘Hyangli’ from Naju. They have a effect to army in the cause of justice who resist the order for the cutting of topknots(斷髮令) at 1896 in this field. And they participated the ‘Righteous armies’, so distinguished themselves an anti-Japanese movement in final period of the Great Han Empire. Also they became a landowner. They joined in a various social activity because they try to secure their base. They reached a new knowledge base as their economic power and positive in new education. Especially, what is the reason of they want the strong social network and positive social activity? First of all, their activity is racial movement. Second, they intend to found their politic and social basis strongly, I believe. Now to conclude, ‘Excellent social advance’ of Naju Park was not they was Hyangli but their social network for Hyangli and successful economy for the landowner management. And their social network was accomplishedby marriage and modern education.
