초등영어 수업에서 실생활 듣기와 말하기 능력향상을 위한 문제중심학습(PBL)의 적용 효과

현대사회가 국제화ᆞ정보화 사회로 접어들면서 의사소통의 필요성이 증가하고 세계 공용어라불리는 영어의 중요성이 점차 커지고 있다. 이에 초등 영어에서는 일상생활에서 듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기의 기능을 실제로 사용할 수 있도록 하는 의사소통 능력의 신장을 목표로 다양한 학습방법을 제시하고 있다. 여러 학습방법 중 비구조적이고 실제적인 맥락의 문제 상황으로부터 학습을 시작하는 문제중심학습은 이러한 실생활에서의 의사소통 능력을 길러주기에 적합하다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 초등학교 영어수업에 문제중심학습(PBL)이 학습자의 일상생활에서의 듣기와 말하기 능력향상에 효과적인지를 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 따라서 초등학교 5학년 영어수업에 4주 동안 8차시에 걸쳐 문제중심학습을 적용하여 효과를 분석하였다. 그 과정에서 문제중심학습에 대한 학습자의 반응 및 참여태도는 어떠한지 관찰하여 수업에 반영하였다. 문제중심학습이 강의식 수업보다실생활 의사소통 능력에 효과가 있는지를 알아보기 듣기와 말하기 능력 평가를 실시하고 SPSS 프로그램을 사용하여 독립표본 t-test(p<0.05)로 검증하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 문제중심학습으로 개발된 영어수업을 받은 실험집단은 강의식 영어 수업을 받은 통제집단보다 듣기에서더 높은 점수를 받았으나, 통계적으로는 유의하지 않았다. 둘째, 문제중심학습으로 개발된 영어수업을 받은 실험집단은 강의식 영어 수업을 받은 통제집단보다 말하기에서 더 높은 점수를 받았으며, 이는 통계적으로도 유의하게 높았다. 결론적으로 문제중심학습은 초등학생들의 실생활 말하기능력 신장에 효과가 있다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Recently, the need for communicative competence in English has been increasing; therefore,English at the elementary school level has focused on the communicative abilities of children in real-life situations. There have been various teaching methods proposed to achieve this purpose. Among them, problem-based learning, which starts with real life problems, is one of the methods used to improve children's real life communicative skills and interests. The purpose of this study was to discover the effect of PBL on the listening and speaking abilities of students in real-life situations. To achieve this purpose, two groups were selected from fifth graders in an elementary school which is located in Seoul, Korea. For four weeks, the experimental group were taught using PBL, and the control group were taught using conventional methods based on the national curriculum. In the PBL group, the student's reactions were observed and analyzed in the process of the PBL. At the end of the study, the communicative abilities of the students were evaluated through problems which reflected listening and speaking abilities in real-life situations. The results of the test were analyzed with an independent sample t-test using the SPSS/WIN statistics program. The results indicate, first, that the listening scores of the experimental group, to which problem-based learning had been applied, was higher than that of the control group; but the difference between the two samples was not statistically significant. Second, the speaking score of the experimental group, to which PBL had been applied, was higher than the control group;and the difference between the two samples was statistically significant. We can conclude,therefore, that elementary English classes based on problem-based learning are an effective method of increasing the speaking abilities of children in real-life situations.
