Abstract

Letters in traditional age were a means of the inquiry and scientific discussion between learned men. The research of the traditional letters concentrated on the calligraphy or literary sensibility, but it went unnoticed that the letters could be a historical records, even though those contain the personal content. However, the situation would be completely different if an addresser were a king. Because the words and actions of a king could be a history. The newly introduced JeongJoEuChalCheb was an album of secret letters which King JeongJo sent to Sim Hwanji. The large volume of 297 letters covers last 4 years of King JeongJo's reign. This thesis tried to explain about the Informational value of JeongJoEuChalCheb. First, it was carried out the general review of King JeongJo's letters. Then the addresser and receiver were defined through the handwriting, seals, terms, mutual designations and the other contents of the letters. Also it was figured out the special feature of the King JeongJo's letters. JeongJoEuChalCheb is not only a secondary historical record, but also an important document which could show the way of the king's rule. So it could be called another authentic history of King JeongJo.
