Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze conception types related to Galvani and electrolytic cells. Sanger and Greenbowe's interview protocols for the cells were used with modifications in this study. These questions were administered and follow-up interviews were conducted to pre-service chemistry teachers. This study revealed that several pre-service teachers in the sample were confused about identifying the anode and cathode, understanding the charge on the anode and cathode, understanding the need for a standard half-cell, predicting the products of electrolysis, and understanding current flow in Galvani and electrolytic cells. In the case of the purpose of the salt bridge, it was shown that pre-service teachers only thought that the salt bridge is for ion movement of two solutions involving electrodes, but they didn't have the conception that the salt bridge has a roll of connecting a circuit. Most pre-teachers had misconception in electrolysis of solution taking no account of water electrolysis. As the results of this study, it was possible that pre-service teacher's conceptual difficulties and misconceptions were caused by insufficient expert knowledge, insufficient explanations of the textbooks, and teachers having misconceptions.
