본 연구는 콜버그(Kohlberg)의 정의공동체 접근이 지니는 도덕교육적 특징과 시사점을 고찰하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 인지도덕 발달론자인 콜버그는 블라트의 연구에 기초하여 가상적인 딜레마 토론을 통한 도덕교육을 주장하였다. 이 방법은 기존의 덕목주의와 행동주의 교육이론에 내재된 도덕적 상대주의와 교화의 위험성으로부터 벗어날 수 있다고 보았기 때문이다. 콜버그는 이 방법을 학교 및 교도소에 적용하는 과정에서 도덕적 판단과 행위간의 불일치 문제, 실제적인 문제의 경시 문제, 잠재적 교육과정의 영향력 경시 등의 문제를 인식하고 새로운 대안을 모색하기 시작하였다. 그가 이러한 한계를 극복할 있는 대안으로 모색한 것이 정의 공동체 접근이다. 이 접근은 키부츠 방문을 통하여 그 이론적 토대가 마련되었고, 교도소에서 처음으로 적용한 다음, 그 긍정적인 연구 결과에 고무 받아 클러스터 고등학교에서 실제로 적용하기 시작하였다. 정의 공동체 접근은 참여 민주주의 원리를 구현하여 도덕교육에 대한 정의의 관점과 공동체적 관점 즉, 개인주의적인 도덕교육과 듀르케임의 집단주의 도덕교육과의 조화를 추구하였다. 즉, 실제적인 도덕적 딜레마에 대한 토론을 통하여 개인 및 집단의 도덕 발달을 촉진하고자 하였고, 잠재적 교육과정 즉 공동체의 분위기가 도덕교육에 있어서 중요한 요인이 된다는 점을 강조하였다. 이와 함께 구성원들의 공동체에 대한 책임감과 소속감, 동료집단의 영향력, 도덕적 옹호자, 촉진자로서 교사의 역할, 형식에 대한 교육과 함께 내용에 대한 교육의 필요성, 가상적인 딜레마보다는 학교 안에서 실제로 직면하는 도덕적인 문제에 대한 토론을 강조하였다. 콜버그가 주장한 가상적인 딜레마 토론수업과 정의 공동체 접근은 많은 차이점을 지니고 있지만 공통적으로 도덕교육의 목적은 도덕발달의 촉진에 있고, 그 방법은 딜레마 토론이어야 한다는 점은 중시하였다. 덕교육 및 통합적 인격교육론을 중요한 이론적 배경으로 삼고 있는 7차 도덕과 교육과정에서는 학교 및 교실의 도덕공동체화 방안을 중요한 도덕교육의 방법으로 제안하고 있다. 콜버그의 정의 공동체 접근은 이러한 도덕공동체화 방안을 제시하는데 중요한 이론적 기초가 되고 있다. 이러한 관점에 기초하여 본 논문에서는 교실 도덕 공동체화를 위한 구체적인 방안을 모색하기 위한 시도로 콜버그의 정의 공동체 접근을 고찰하였다. 마지막으로 정의공동체 접근이 우리나라 도덕과 교육에 주는 시사점을 도덕교육의 목표, 내용 ,방법, 그리고 통합적 도덕교육의 관점에서 제시해보았다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the just community approach and its implications on moral education. The Just Community Approach in moral education is based on a cognitive-developmental approach, from visits to a kibbutz and the structural psychological theory of individual moral judgment development that has been tried in prisons and cluster high schools. This approach focuses on building a moral community by involving students in democratic decision making. The core of these approaches was group moral discussions of hypothetical and practical dilemmas. This approach represents an effort to balance justice and community. Moral education in a just community school has to deal with content as well as structure. The teacher not only facilitates discussion among students, but also leads them in decision making by advocating. Finally, the moral educational implications of research on the just community approach are addressed in this study.
