한국 대학 영어 학습자들의 자기주도적 영어 읽기 학습에 관한 연구: 저널쓰기를 중심으로

본 연구는 한국 대학 영어 학습자들을 대상으로 저널쓰기를 활용한 자기주도적 영어 읽기 학습을 실시하고 자기주도적 학습 과정 중 자기성찰의 내용을 분석하여 이 학습 방안의 효용성을 알아보고 이 학습 방안에 대한 학습자들의 인식을 연구하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 저널쓰기를 활용한 자기주도적 학습 방안을 고안하고 이를 영어교육을 전공하는 31명의 학생들에게 적용하고, 자기주도적 학습을 하면서 저널을 작성하도록 하였다. 또한, 이 학습 방안에 대한 학습자들의 인식을 알아보기 위하여 설문조사를 실시하였다. 이로부터 수집된 저널 및 설문조사 결과들은 각각 질적 및 양적 분석 방법을 통해 분석하였다. 그 결과, 학습자들은 저널을 작성하게 됨으로써 학습 과정 및 읽기 과정, 자신의 읽기 상의 문제점, 자신의 읽기능력에 대한 자기 평가, 향후 학습 내용 및 방법이라는 측면들에 대해 적극적으로 성찰하게 되어 자기주도적 학습의 원리를실제적으로 구현하도록 유도되었음을 알 수 있다. 또한, 자기주도적 학습 방법은 자신들의 학습에 도움이 되었으며 저널쓰기는 자기주도적 학습을 하는 데에 있어서 긍정적 영향을 주었다고 인식하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This study focuses on a self-directed learning program of English reading, which administered journal writing to Korean undergraduate EFL learners. By analyzing the journal entries, this study aims at uncovering both the characteristics of self-reflection during self-directed learning and the students’ perceptions on the usefulness of the program. To this end, a self-directed program was developed and applied to 31 students majoring in English education as a reading activity out of the class. While doing the self-directed learning, they were asked to keep journals of their reading/learning processes. They also participated in a questionnaire survey that investigated their perceptions of the activity. The collected journals and questionnaires were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed that the students reflected on the learning objectives, contents, and methods, and they considered self-directed learning using journal writing useful and conducive to their English reading. These results implied that keeping journals led learners to reflect on their learning and assisted learners to realize self-directed learning substantially.
