Abstract
The purpose of research in this article is to consider the BanJeon(盤纏) usage patterns of the next of kin military officer(子弟軍官), the chief delegate(正使), and the interpreter(譯 官) who were in the government delegation tasked with delivering the news of the king’s death and making petitions in 1720, focusing on Lee Ki-ji(李器之)’s Ilamyeongi[一菴燕記]. Various expenses incurred during their Yeonhaeng(燕行) were paid using various objects of Joseon taken with them as BanJeon, which showed different usage patterns according to their statuses. The BanJeon used by Lee Ki-ji as the next of kin military officer can be divided into BanJeon used to form a friendly relationship with the guards and BanJeon used during social interactions. Next, the BanJeon used by the chief delegate can be divided into BanJeon as presents in terms of bribery for safely carrying out his official duties, and BanJeon as expenses necessary for the chief delegate’s room, and BanJeon as expenses for the chief delegate’s personal needs. Lastly, the BanJeon used by the interpreter to purchase various goods as presents for the top three high-ranking delegates. This article sought to look at the reality of Yeonhaeng in a broader way by examining how the status-based usage patterns of BanJeon varied.
