Abstract

It is a widely held belief that parting is inherently associated with the emotion of ‘sorrow’. This perspective serves as a prevailing criterion for evaluating farewell poems, making the dominant standard of artistic value dependent on how effectively they convey such emotions. However, categorizing the predominant sentiment in Joseon dynasty farewell poems solely as ‘sorrow’ oversimplifies their historical and literary reality. The authors of farewell poems were primarily bureaucrat-literati, and such poems were often composed on the occasion of a colleague's departure for a new post. Such personnel transfers were, in most cases, made on the premise that the individual would eventually return to the central government office. Among farewell poems, there was a specific type called ‘jeonbyeol poems(餞別詩),’ which served as a symbol of bureaucratic solidarity and camaraderie, reaffirming their roles and responsibilities as officials working for the king and the people. Rather than focusing on expressions of sorrow, these poems served to remind the readers of their responsibilities and obligations, strengthen social and moral bonds, and highlight the glory of their families and individuals. Instead of sorrowful rhetoric, parting poems often emphasized promises to meet again in the royal court, mutual empathy and encouragement for their shared circumstances-where they could be sent to distant provinces or even foreign territories at any time-and the concept of ‘chaekseon(責善)-demanding virtue-’. These types of poems have often been criticized as lacking lyricism and being overly repetitive and conventional. This is because they were composed with a public purpose and in a ceremonial manner. However, it is necessary to reconsider the act of evaluating poems written in a public context using the standards of lyrical poetry. Furthermore, the jeonbyeol poems(餞別詩) written by individuals who shared the common experience of bureaucratic life and friendships sustained over several generations carried a consciousness of continuing the ‘refined cultural practices(雅事)’ of previous generations, and this can be noted as a contributing factor in shaping the unique characteristics of jeonbyeol poems(餞別詩).
