Abstract
Baekgok (柏谷) Kim Deuk-sin, a renowned scholar and poet of the late Joseon period known for his literary works and extensive reading, personally experienced and documented the changes occurring in Anheungjin in the 1650s. During the Joseon dynasty, Anheungjin was not only a key waypoint and hub for coastal shipping routes but also played a critical role as a strategic support point behind Ganghwa Island, the center of the West Coast defense system. Through his acquaintance with Seolbong (雪峰) Kang Baek-nyeon, then the Chungcheong Provincial Governor, Kim Deuk-sin had the opportunity to witness and document the relocation of naval bases and the restructuring of the defense system in Anheungjin. As he traveled through Anheungjin, Kim left behind records, including the prose pieces “Bokpajeonggi” and “Anheungjin Twelve Peaks,” while Kang Baek-nyeon also composed poems during his regional patrols. Bokpajeong, described by Kim Deuk-sin, was a pavilion located on Sinjindo Island, newly established at the time as a naval stronghold, offering views over the Anheungjin area. The writings of Kim Deuk-sin and Kang Baek-nyeon capture the spatial significance and historical context of 17th-century Anheungjin, a topic that has largely been overlooked. This study examines the poems and prose left by Kim Deuk-sin and Kang Baek-nyeon, identifies the locations and sites referred to in “Anheungjin Twelve Peaks,” and analyzes how various changing landscapes of Anheungjin are reflected in their literary works. This research on the distinctive locations and landscapes of Anheungjin contributes to a historical and cultural understanding of the area and can also serve as foundational material for the development of regional cultural content in the future.
