Abstract
Research on So Seyang's Diary of a Journey to the Capital (赴京日記) has been actively conducted alongside the systematic organization of diplomatic mission literature. However, most studies have remained limited to analyses based on photographic reproductions without sufficient bibliographic examination, consequently failing to properly illuminate the academic value of both the original manuscript and the early 20th-century copy produced by the Compilation Committee for Korean History. This study systematically examines the transmission process of five versions of Diary of a Journey to the Capital yielding the following conclusions. The chronological sequence of physical editions is: 1) original manuscript 2) edited version in collected works 3) copied version in collected works 4) transcribed copy 5) woodblock-printed edition in collected works. From a textual genealogical perspective, the evolutionary pattern follows: 1) original manuscript/transcribed copy 2) edited/copied versions in collected works 3) woodblock-printed edition in collected works. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that a handwritten second version of Yang-gog's Journey to the Capital, created based on a diary borrowed from his nephew So Sun one year before So Seyang's death. This suggests the borrowed diary was likely an official reference journal co-authored by So Seyang with verification officers and document compilers, rather than So Sun's Diary. Through comparative analysis of the five Diary of a Journey to the Capital versions and Yang-gog's Journey to the Capital, this study reveals that the second version contains simplified content compared to the first version, with evidence of intentional deletions and modifications in the collected works editions. While using the original manuscript as the primary source remains academically ideal for translation and textual analysis, practical considerations suggest utilizing the Compilation Committee's authenticated copy as an alternative base text, given the current uncertainty regarding the original manuscript's whereabouts.
