초록

Paul the Apostle is generally considered the ‘founder of Christianity’ among modern theologians. He criticized the doctrines and ritual traditions of Judaism and made Christianity a new religion which was based on the new doctrine, ‘Justification by Grace through Faith’. However, a new evaluation of early Christianity and Paul recently emerged. According to revisionists such as E. P. Sanders, Judaism was not a religion which was based on strict legalism and Paul lived as a Jew until death. While I agree with the new perspective, I still think Paul should be called the ‘founder of Christianity’. After the ‘Antioch Incident’ occurred in the late 40's, Paul left Antioch as a complete loser. But this incident gave him a new opportunity to go on a mission without any control or guide of the Jerusalem Church. This opportunity made Paul be able to make a dozen of ‘house church’ which were different fundamentally from the institutions of Judaism. These house churches were free from any control of other believers except Paul's. They made new communities which were based on the new teaching of Paul, that is, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Conservative Christians among Jews and Gentiles could not approve these groups, because they were too progressive. So these groups were to be the objets of oppressions. Especially the circumcision group in the Jerusalem Church attacked fiercely the house churches founded by Paul in the 50s. I think Paul's greatest achievement is not his new doctrine but the foundation of house churches. In this respect Paul could be called the ‘founder of Christianity’.
