Abstract

Purpose: Healthcare supply chain management (HSCM) involves obtaining resources, managing supplies, and delivering goods and services to providers and patients. By promoting efficiency in the healthcare supply chain, hospitals and physicians can create substantial cost-reduction opportunities across their organization. Thus, HSCM plays an important role in enhancing the service quality of the healthcare industry. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the development of HSCM by analyzing the previous studies on HSCM and suggesting their implications for future studies. Composition/Logic: This paper is composed of five chapters. Chapter I offers the introduction and explains the background and purpose of this study. Chapter II analyzes the importance of HSCM based on its definitions and roles. Chapter III analyzes the current studies in view of the different categories of subjects and methodologies. Chapter IV finds the implications of the current studies and the directions for future studies. Chapter V concludes this paper. Findings: The case study approach has turned out to be more popular among published HSCM papers. On the other hand, it is interesting to note that in congruence with the pattern of generic SCM research, empirical methods based on hypothesis testing are minimal when it comes to HSCM research. HSCM research activities dealing with IT, purchasing, and security are scant compared to studies focusing on emergency planning, process improvement and networking design. Going forward, these case methods will be more popular than now and empirical studies could be used owing to the openness of medical data and availability of medical big data. Originality/Value: This study is novel in view of the fact that previous studies are categorized as follows. In terms of subjects, the studies are categorized as ① process improvement and waste elimination; ②emergency response plan; ③ healthcare network design; ④ healthcare material purchase management; ⑤ healthcare supplies inventory management; ⑥ healthcare information system and information technology; and ⑦ healthcare safety and security. In terms of methodologies, the studies are categorized as ① conceptual study; ② case study; ③ exploratory study; ④ empirical study; ⑤ and analytic study.
