Abstract
This paper aims to explain how home economics could be constructed as modern scientific knowledge for women in Korea. Home economics as ‘modern’ knowledge had appeared in Korea when the textbook of Home economics in middle school was translated from Japan in the early 1900s. Increase of women’s regular schooling started to emphasize the importance of Home economics in the national level. However, the knowledge of home economics was treated as ‘skills’ for women’s daily lives not as ‘science’ in the academic field before colonization. The rise of Home economics as ‘scientific’ knowledge in the colonial Korea was facilitated by the institutionalization of Home Economics at Ewha College in 1929. The department of Home Economics at Ewha drew up the curriculum composed of the subjects of natural science such as chemistry, biology, physics and physiology etc.. At the same time, the faculty of Home Economics department was constituted by not only home economists but also scholars of natural science. The social science in the academic field was suppressed by the Japanese general government though there are lively debates on social issues like the meaning of modern home and the subjectivity of modern women in Korea. After the 1930s, women majoring in Home Economics at Ewha could be the experts of home science in colonial Korean society. Fnally, they got the official licence of middle-school teachers in 1937. Also, their articles and columns about home science were increased, especially focusing on the scientific housework in the Korean modern family. Nevertheless, women majoring in Home Economics were situated in the conflict between the dual professionalism as a housewife and a expert outside home since the Japanese government had imposed the role of ‘the wise mother and good wife’ during the colonial period.
