Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to analyze the institutionalization process of the Bologna Process and its institutional characteristics drawing on theories of sociological institutionalism, a form of new institutionalism. Two analytical frameworks were used for this study. First, Tolbert and Zucker’s 3 levels of institutionalization model (habitualization, objectification, and sedimentation) were employed to analyze the institutionalization process of the Bologna Process. In addition, three main characteristics of the institution, which are taken for grantedness, legitimacy and isomorphism, were also adopted to analyze the Bologna Process’ institutional characteristics and the institutionalization process. The results of the analysis show that from the perspective of sociological institutionalism, the Bologna Process has been settled and formed as an institution through the institutionalization process and it contains the institutional characteristics explained by sociological institutionalism such as taken for grantedness, isomorphism, and legitimacy.
