Abstract
Focusing on the rapid physical and psychological changes experienced by middle-aged housewives, this study aimed to examine whether grit enhances well-being of middle-aged houswives through meaning in life(searching for and presence of meaning) and midlife crisis. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on middle-aged houswives (aged 50~64 years) of their youngest child aged 19 years or older. Using 219 housewives’ data, PROCESS Macro(Model 6) was used to verify mediating effects. Results showed that grit positively predicted mental well-being and the simple mediation effect of the presence of meaning was significant. Double mediation effects of the searching for and the presence of meaning, the searching for meaning and midlife crisis, and the presence of meaning and midlife crisis were all significant as well as the triple mediation of all three variables(the searching for meaning, the presence of meaning, and midlife crisis). This study showed that middle-aged housewives’ grit accumulated in family-caring environment plays an important role in living a happy life with full potential similar to that of professionals in diverse workforces.
