Abstract

This article is a preliminary study attempting to investigate the effects of the ever increasing number of female physicians and medical students on the health care system. A self-conducted questionnaire survey of 210 female medical students collected data on their perception and attitude towards professionalism, social accountability, the role of female doctors etc. The study shows that the respondents perceived the deterioration of social prestige and professional autonomy of doctors. They also tend to have negative self-esteem due to the gap between their expectations for social respect and the actual responses of the society. On the other hand, they admitted that doctors themselves are partly responsible for this negative attitude toward them in the society and the necessity of collective efforts keep their professional status and autonomy with rising consumerism. They also recognize the relatively low status of female doctors due to the social misperception and their lack of political and social empowerment. The need for a new paradigm of medical education, such as gender-specific medicine was proved to be a very important agenda in order to improve the role of female doctors and health care system in general as well.
