미국 대통령 취임 연설문의제의성(祭儀性)과 가치지향- 토마스 제퍼슨에서 버락 오바마까지 11개의취임 연설문을 중심으로 -

본 논문은 미국 대통령의 취임연설에 나타난 제의적 특성과 함께 가치적 지향을 규명하기 위해 토마스 제퍼슨에서 버락 오바마 대통령에 이르는 대통령 10명의 취임사 11개를 대상으로 수사 분석 프로그램인 딕션(Diction 5.0)을 활용, 분석했다. 연구 결과 청중통합의 기제, 시간의 현재성 지향, 공통 가치에의 호소 등 아리스토텔레스가 구분한 제의적 장르가 갖는 특성이 근-현대 미국 대통령 취임연설에도 반영되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 연설을 이루는 의미단위인 단어가 통합적으로 지향하는 가치를 알아본 결과, 활동성(Activity), 낙천주의(Optimism), 확실성(Certainty), 현실주의(Realism), 공통성(Commonality) 등 다섯 가지 의미론으로 대변되는 특징 중 대통령 취임 연설문은 낙천주의와 현실주의 특징이 높게 나온 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the rhetorical strategies of the inaugural addresses of the presidents of the United States of America. For the purpose of analysis, the full transcripts of ten presidents’ inaugural addresses were selected, and Diction 5.0 program was used. The results of the analysis showed that the selected American presidents exhibited a general tendency to employ epideictic oratory as a means of persuasion. Epideictic oratory is used to achieve a) the construction of a unified audience; b) the conveyance of values; and c) the achievement of an eternal present. As for the value orientation of the inaugural addresses, the Diction 5.0 program analysis revealed that out of 5 characteristics, which are Optimism, Certainty, Realism, Activity, Commonality, the characteristics of Optimism and Realism appeared to be prevalent among presidential addresses.
