The Japanese modern girl with bobbed hair that appeared in the 1920s was also a symbol of urban culture. Women with bobbed hair, along with Western-style clothing, became a feature associated with the “modern girl,” and magazines and newspapers formed a prejudice that “modern girls” were frivolous and unchaste women. However, few studies have focused on what the women thought about when they cut their hair, or what they said in the midst of such prejudice. The purpose of this study is to reveal, from a micro perspective, the reasons why they cut their hair, the changes in their feelings due to the haircut, and the hardships and conflicts caused by public prejudice through the texts left by women who cut their hair at that time, which have rarely been paid attention to. It is an attempt to reexamine the theory of the “modern girl with bobbed hair” by deciphering the inner workings of a modern cultural phenomenon through an analysis of articles left by women who have cut their hair.
